PASHANZ - INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS

WHAT IS PASHANZ?

PASHANZ, Promoters Advocating for Sexual Health in Aotearoa-New Zealand, is a registered charity and national collective of health promoters who contribute towards positive sexual health for all New Zealanders.

WHAT DOES PASHANZ DO?  OUR AIMS AND ACTIVITIES

In 2015, PASHANZ was registered as a charitable trust and its activities are coordinated and governed by a Trust Board of elected members.

The three aims for our membership are to enable:

1. Advocacy at a national level on sexual health and health promotion issues

2. Information Sharing to foster innovation and enhance best practice

3. Workforce Development opportunities

The main activities to help achieve our aims are:

4. Advocacy

a. Building relationships with other national-level organisations, such as NZSHS and Ministry of Health to enable advocacy on behalf of the PASHANZ membership

b. Encouraging members’ organisations to support PASHANZ through regular updates

c. Alerting PASHANZ members to either make an individual advocacy response or contribute towards a coordinated PASHANZ response on sexual health and health promotion issues

5. Information Sharing

d. Providing a portal or platform for members to post contributions and updates, as well as actively seeking contributions and resources to be shared within PASHANZ

6. Workforce Development

e. An annual training day usually held around the same time as the annual NZSHS conference

f. Up to four teleconference-type meetings per year to network and strategise local and national issues

g. Provide a resource list of health promotion training that would be of benefit to members

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER - WHAT DO I GET, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO

The PASHANZ membership draws from a diverse base of people working in different health promotion agencies, including District Health Boards, non-governmental, Māori, and Pacific organisations. PASHANZ exists mainly for sexual and reproductive health promoters, but anyone working under vote health funding, or an interest in sexual and reproductive Health can become a member upon application to the PASHANZ Trust as long as their employing organisation is supportive of that membership.

There is no joining or recurring membership fee, however, PASHANZ members agree to:

· The PASHANZ code of ethics

· Have (or be working towards having) a relevant health promotion certification or competency

· Participation in at least two teleconference meetings per year or one teleconference and the annual training day.

· Make effort to attend the annual training day

· Be willing to share information, resources, and provide input into any advocacy issues

HOW PASHANZ STARTED - OUR HISTORY

In 2000, at the NZ Venereological Society conference in Palmerston North, a group of sexual reproductive health promoters who worked in public health identified a lack of opportunity at the conference to network and share information that was relevant to sexual and reproductive health promotion. This was the start of the group that eventually became PASHANZ. In subsequent years, the activities of the group focused mainly on regular teleconferences and professional development meetings tied-in with the annual NZ Sexual Health Society conference.(Source: Brief history of PASHANZ 2000-13)
